[livejournal.com profile] antennapedia tagged me for this meme, and I've finally pulled together a list and a few thoughts on the subject.

5. Therapy.
I like this for the uneasy, eager, dorky, repentant-but-clueless Angel and the Wesley, who's still fumbling out of his carapace of nervous incompetence towards badass scholar/demon hunter. I'm very fond of the Sanskrit bit, too. Wesley/Angel is not a ship I sail with (After Wesley/Giles, Wes/Gunn rings my bells the most) but I enjoyed writing this. I felt so sad for Wesley when Angel was kissing up to Cordelia; it felt good to show Angel working to make amends with Wes as well. I am not satisfied with the title, but it gets the job done.

4. Never Spoken.
I like aftermath stories, and I wondered what the chocolate comedown would be like. The events of this story were always clear in my mind, but it took several tries to settle on a way of telling it. I like the allusions to the post-Becoming summer that the Xander-pov make possible, but there are things I really liked about the abortive Giles-pov version. Maybe that will see the light of LJ one day. Anyway. Bits of this that I particularly like are Xander's methodical tea-making, his desperate anti-arousal thoughts (Willow. Luge. Minesweeper. Willow.) and Giles' line "There's fuck-all to wear in there, unless I want to host a fancy-dress party as C.S. fucking Lewis." I also like "a hand-packed gallon of awkward with chunks of weird British slang."

3. Three Conversations in Liminal Spaces.
I owe this one to [livejournal.com profile] bethynyc's prompt "the beginning of a real relationship between them." So much more interesting (to me) than a first-time story. Which might explain why I haven't written any first-time stories.

I like this because it is a little bit of a romantic comedy, if you think of Buffy s3 canon as the "meet cute" in which the twu wuvvers hate each other, and the story being the Getting to Know You in which they recognize their attraction for each other. On rereading, I wish I'd found a less ex machina way to bring in the cat, and that perhaps I'd taken more time with section 2, but the whole AU still makes me ridiculously happy.

I'm particularly fond of the confrontation between Wesley and his dad, and the conversation in the attic.

2. Intransigence.
This scratches so many of my fic-writing-and-reading itches at once. It deals with what happened offstage during S7, and possible partial explanations for Giles' pod!behavior, and how events from Angel and Buffy synch up. And though it's a big shameless h/c-athon, I flatter myself that it's not absurdly shmoopy except in the dream. (Which is maybe cheating, but it makes me happy, dammit.)

1. When They Take You In.
I am terribly enamored of the elder Gileses, and the uncomfortable prodigal-son-ness of the whole situation, and the scene with Henry and Rupert and the crossbow, and the hints about Rupert's (not abusive, thankyouverymuch) childhood. When I reread it, there are a few bits of prose that I itch to replace or tweak, but overall I have a good feeling of (to paraphrase [livejournal.com profile] greyhoundliz on high-quality alcohol,) "yeah, I'd read that on purpose."

kivrin: Giles with a book (bookish giles (glim))

Comment with the words "Top Ten" or "Top Five", and I will reply with a subject for which you will generate a top ten (or top five) list. Post the list and instructions in your own journal.

Antenna gave me the option of giving Top Ten Stupid Patron Responses to Clearly-Posted Library Rules as myself or as Rupert Giles. I've had my say, now it's time for

Rupert Giles' Top Five Clearly-Posted Rules of the Sunnydale High School Library, With Asinine Student Responses Thereto:

5. No Food or Drink Beyond This Point posted at the top of each flight of stairs into the stacks. Larry: "Geez!" *roll of eyes* *slurp of soda* "Is it okay if I have the carbonated gas in my system when I go up there?"

4. All Materials Must Be Checked Out Before Leaving The Library posted at the desk, by the doors, and in various other places throughout the room. Cordelia: "I wasn't going to keep it, just take it home for a while. I don't need to check it out for that."

3. No More Than Three Items On One Subject May Be Checked Out To A Single Student At The Same Time posted at the desk. Harmony: "But Dr. Bronson is making my whole class do papers on precipices!" Willow: "Precipitation?" Harmony: "Whatever."

2. Fiction Is Arranged Alphabetically By Author's Last Name posted at each end of each range of fiction stacks. Percy (Willow's tutee): "Well, how am I supposed to know who wrote the stupid book?"

1. Before this particular comment I had not seen any need to put up a Do Not Cut Articles, Pictures, Mail-in forms, or Any Other Component Part, From The Magazines sign in the periodicals section, but by God, there is a notice there now. Another of Cordelia's Hangers-On: "I need pictures for a report. And my parents' taxes pay for these magazines! And you!"

Title: Kitchen Dreams
Characters: Giles
Rating: G

Parsnips were hard work; the peeler always stuck near the tip, and the smell wouldn’t come off Rupert’s hands even when he washed. Still, he liked it when Mum gave him a real job, not just babyish tasks of counting carrots or choosing potatoes. Roasted parsnips tasted good, so the work was worth it. Not like onions, which were satisfying to pull from the garden but nasty to eat, or tomatoes that were finicky to pick and slimy inside. When Rupert had his own shop like Mr.Barnicot, he would sell all the onions and never have any tomatoes at all.

I thought about asking if anyone wanted a DVD commentary of any of my stories, and then I just went ahead and did one.  Do chime in if you'd like to see a commentary on some other story, or go here to ask me or my characters any questions.

Title: When They Take You In
Characters: Giles and his parents, with allusions to Giles' demon-raising buddies
Rating: PG-13
Any major warnings: none
Prompt words used: water, home ,isolation, anger
Summary: Home is the place that, when you have to go there, they have to take you in.  After the Eyghon debacle, Rupert and his parents pick up the pieces.

This story has been sloshing around in one form or another for quite a while.  (Hurrah for freeform ficathons that allow one to finish things!) Almost a year ago I posted the following summary as part of a WIP meme:

Eyghon/Randall: Muhuahahahhah!!
Ethan: Whoa.
Dierdre, Thomas, and Philip: eeek! run away! run away!
Giles: [slice]
Thomas: [barf]
Ethan: We can rebuild him! We have the technology!
Giles: Shut up.
Dierdre: What's that?
Giles: The Council! RUN AWAY!
***
Giles: Father? Can I come in?
Giles Sr: [wielding crossbow] I don't know. Can you?
Mrs. Giles: Eat something.
Council: You're a naughty, naughty boy.
Giles: Eep.
***
Random Oxford University Official: Well, Mr. Giles, it's good to have you back.
Giles: [cough]
Random College Official: Hm. So you're back, eh. Write me an essay.
Giles: [cough]
Olivia: Oi! RIPPER! Thought you were too hard for this sort of game. You're still quite sexy, though, even with a haircut.
Giles: Er... mmmph! [kiss kiss]

Which, barring the section with Olivia and the return to Oxford, is pretty much what happens here. This story is also (mostly) consistent with the drabbles Calling, Food of the Gods, Sick, SickerRemorse, and Mother’s Eyes.

meme snagged from [livejournal.com profile] headrush100:

Ask me anything you want about any of my stories: how I thought of the idea, what I did to write it, what I was thinking when I wrote it, what I feel about it now, what I wish I'd done differently, etc. Or ask any of the characters from particular stories something you want to know, and get an answer from them. Or both.

Title: The Archivist
Characters: Buffy/Giles
Rating: PG-13

He is still, always, the record-keeper, all their apocalypses mapped on his skin. In darkness the whorls and ridges of his scars are like Braille under her fingertips: a star at his temple, five small sunken ovals around a too-smooth circle on his chest, a long, thick, twisted snake along his left side. Stripes on his back, odd uneven lines on his fingers, countless lumps beneath his hair. Gwendolen Post, she whispers, Willow, the Knights. When her hand covers his, he grips it hard and kisses her harder, stilling her lips before she can continue: Angel, Angel, Angel.

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] penwiper26, [livejournal.com profile] headrush100, and [livejournal.com profile] glimmergirl for saving me from serious implausibilities, weak endings, inconsistencies of tone, Americanisms in the mouths of Englishmen, and bad Latin. All remaining flaws are totally my fault.

Missed Connection

Buffy told Willow it's fine, and she tries to believe that. After all, it's not like Willow's doing anything new, not like she and Tara weren't already joined at the hip, already walking hand in hand, talking all night.

It’s not like Will and Tara were doing anything Buffy and Willow hadn't done. Before.

When Buffy comes back from patrol, there’s a cheery @ Tara’s tonight! on their whiteboard. She sits on her empty bed, arms crossed over the weird ache in her stomach, and whispers to the silence, "It should have been me. It should have been us."
Not All Regrets

He remembers that summer fondly, even now. Remembers fags on grey days, pints of shandy on hot ones. Rough-housing on park benches, Deirdre squealing and all of them laughing until they nearly pissed themselves. Remembers sucking Ethan off on a bus' upper deck in the not-dark-enough of night, to the noisy, confused distress of a middle-aged woman on her way home from the theater. Remembers that it wasn't only witching hours and demons, not just blood on his hands and guilt roiling his guts. He was young, he loved, and if he was also reckless, he cannot wholly regret it.

Searching

Another alley, another host of eyeless monks. Another starless night, this one still warm as afternoon and so humid it's hard to breathe. Another girl, this one dark-haired, speechless, bleeding from a fall on the pavement. Giles pushes her against the wall, putting himself between her and the Bringers.

The girls should blur in his mind like the alleys, but they are Slayers, if only in potential, and stubborn. He remembers how fear looked on each face, how anger and pleading mingled in each voice. When Chao-Ahn screams, he hears the other voices, dead and living together driving him on.
