Just got an email from E. Dave Carter, the songwriter in the astonishingly talented folk duo Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer, died suddenly on Friday of a heart attack. Exactly one week before Falcon Ridge.

All the usual thoughts about death come to me now - No! and I'll never be able... and Why?. It boils down to this final mystery, a mystery more of life than of death: there was a man who closed his eyes and sang words that pierced and haunted me, and everything of him that could be seen exists still - his hair, and his eyes, and his hands, and the cells of his mind where his songs were born. But the voice is gone, and the things that remain - the things that someone who knew him from a distance (as I did) might use to describe him - are empty and shapeless as cast-off clothes. They are not him.

I got the news myself on Friday evening, and spent the weekend crying off and on :-(

I've posted a bit on this in my Livejournal over the weekend.

As a happier note, common interests in Dave & Tracy, and Falcon Ridge are what lead me to your LJ in the first place; what you wrote was interesting, so I added you to my Friends list :-)

I'm more stunned than anything, just now. I hadn't heard until this afternoon. I spent a good bit of time at work reading through the dave-and-tracy yahoogroup, and found the link to your lj piece there. I appreciated it very much. As I commented on a more recent post of yours (I think), I'm going to be at Falcon Ridge this weekend, and I'd love to come join the song circle, though I don't have much to bring... just my knowledge of and appreciation for the tunes and words to everything on Drum Hat Buddha and a good number of the songs from the other albums.

I'm so pleased that you liked my journal enough to 'friend' me. I've 'friended' you back now. :-

Dave's still with us. If I felt anything during Falcon Ridge it was that. I could see him, his face, his words, everywhere.
