To sum up: the new Star Trek movie is FRICKIN' AWESOME.

HOLY FANSERVICE BATMAN, in a way that is DEEPLY AWESOME.

I went in making a conscious decision to embrace the retcon and to not be the girl spilling her popcorn and muttering about canon. When Kirk Senior went down with the ship, I firmly bit back the "but Jim Kirk has a brother Sam!" and rolled with it. But then the crux of the whole plot turned out to be a change in the timeline.

It's an AU. It's. An. AU. I find that extremely pleasing, and I think it is a brilliant way to have one's rebooting cake and eat it too. And, of course, it is what fanfic writers have been doing forever, so. Also pleasing on that count.

In a storytelling way it also, I have to say, pleases me that they destroyed Vulcan and couldn't/didn't go back to fix it. WE CAN HAS HIGH STAKES! ("Nothing ever really changes" was perhaps more of a Next Gen problem than a TOS one, but "whoops, here, everything's fine now!" gets tiresome.)

Things I loved, in no particular order:

Bones. All the time, but especially when he first appeared, and when he kept poking Kirk with things.

Sulu's fencing.

The kid who played tiny!Spock.

Zachary Quinto saying "Live long and prosper" to the council of the Vulcan Science Academy with a flaming neon subtext of "FUCK YOU."

Spock Prime greeting Kirk with The Line.

The way that, though the Fated Timeless Love Between Kirk And Spock was the keystone of the thing, it was also a story of the Fated Timeless Awesome of the Whole Damn Crew. OTCrew FTW!!!

On the negative side, the science is, I'm sure, no science at all, and the given circumstances are RIDICULOUS (...the whole fleet is in the Macguffin System? Really? The whole fleet except for the third-year cadets and a handful of instructors with targets painted on their chests?) But (much as [livejournal.com profile] antennapedia said) my main concerns here were "am I going to be able to accept these people as The Crew?" and "Am I going to be able to buy the retconning?" And the answer is, in both cases, yes.

[livejournal.com profile] breadandroses: OMG, Spock says "your friendship will define you in ways you cannot now imagine"? SPOCK AS SLASH DRAGON!

IT'S THE MOST EXPENSIVE AU FANFIC EVER WRITTEN!!!

When they said "the whole fleet", I mostly thought of the Constitution-class starships, of which Enterprise is one (and she was brand new). There are only twelve, most of which were namechecked when everybody was rushing off to board. (Yes, I do have a copy of the original Starfleet Technical Manual, why do you ask?)

I am still so happy, after seeing it last night and picking up a few groceries at the handy Wegman's in the mall and listening to the radio instead of watching anything else before bed... it is so SHINY.
