Silver Magic

The debate goes on, even after Giles sets his glasses on Viola Harkness's desk and kneels in the circle. No, some keep saying. It's women's magic, earthy, nurturing, older and purer than men.

He refrains from shouting "For God's sake, one of your pure and holy sisters is destroying the earth!"

And then Viola's hands are on him, and he tastes it - sweeter and sharper than Eyghon, deeper and brighter than anything he's cast alone. It's stars and ice; it's quicksilver in his blood, steel in his bones. Alien power, suddenly his.

It's close as he'll come to being Chosen.

Not As Advertised

Giles leaned against the doorjamb. "I did warn you."

"Last month it was a hundred degrees!" Dawn pulled the eiderdown closer. "I saw it on CNN."

Buffy grabbed for the covers. "Brat!"

"Did you, perhaps, miss the words 'unprecedented' and 'record-breaking' in those weather reports?"

"I don't get you." Buffy sat up. "You came from this to California, land of the perfect climate, and still you wore sixteen layers of tweed?"

"Not because of the weather," Giles protested. "I brought clothes for the tropics but I couldn't wear them. Not in the bloody arctic you make with the air conditioning."

End of the Day

At the door of what I've started to call the flat I take off my workboots and put them next to Giles' trainers. Sneakers. Between him and the guys at the site, I'm talking more like Harry Potter every day. When we call Cleveland it makes Willow laugh.

"Honey, I'm home!" I call. She'd laugh at that, too, until she realized that it's stopped being a joke. Then she'd smile, like she did when I told her I was going to London with him.

"Have some tea," Giles says, but his smile tells me I'll be getting a kiss first.
Goodbyes

He's not good at goodbyes; that's why he left a note and slunk off to the airport alone, or so he said. The truth is it's not so much goodbye as the moment after - the turning away, the steps, the being alone but still under the other's eye. The liminal stage, one might say.

If he'd confessed it to Buffy, she would have said 'My god, Giles, are all British people so thinky or is it just you?' Or would once have said - such flippancy had died with her mother.

He wants to leave as Joyce did, without being watched.

It's Still Coming

You think it's over.

I can see it in the way you smile and put your head on her shoulder. You think it wasn't me. You think it was the First. A lie.

Listen to me! I am your mother, young lady, and I do not permit noncorporeal forces, even benevolent ones, to use my face to speak to my daughters. Not everything that can hurt you is otherworldly, or otherdimensional, or whatever the right word is in Slayer terms. Demons are not the only things that cast shadows. Don't you remember?

Be careful, Dawn. The choices are only beginning.
