I was, in short, not impressed.
breadandroses and I found part one literally unwatchable; we bailed after twenty minutes and skipped to the last five, then went straight to part two. Bullet points behind the cut.
- watching Wilf (who I adore) praising Ten is like watching someone gaze adoringly at an obviously abusive partner. Wilf, sweetie, you're worth more than that!
- The Donna payoff is that she has exactly the life she was having before she traveled with the Doctor? She has a marriage that comes off with a pleasant dark-skinned guy who this time isn't secretly a spider? That is the fucking payoff? For this she was mindraped? RTD, retire to Majorca and don't come back.
- I thought I was prepared for Ten to be all emo-riffic about regenerating but I was horrified and disgusted that he was yelling at Wilf for being in the Star Trek II Plot Devicium Death Chamber. I'm sure regenerating hurts and is traumatic but it's not annihilation and complaining about it to someone who will be annihilated if killed is cruel, narcissistic, and just plain tacky.
- It would be easier to feel sorry for Ten if he weren't doing it himself, in broadband multimedia stereo with subtitles, supertitles, concurrent behind-the-scenes specials and follow-along-at-home stratch-n-sniff sticker books. And if there were some sort of specificity to his wish to go on in the current body. Like, oh "I've made a lot of mistakes in this body and I'd like to fix them. Make amends with the same face that offended." Rather than "waaaah nooo don't wanna don't wanna don't wanna!!"
