Thanks, everyone who gave me nail care advice last month. Moisturizing, drinking oodles of milk, and using supertough clear nail polish seem to be helping a lot. I may just need to find a daily-wear thimble for my left thumb, though, because the second the last split grew out enough that I could stop wearing a band-aid, a new split started.
Yesterday I finished reading Sunshine by Robin McKinley. I might read it again, which puts it one up on Spindle's End. It's very interesting how Sunshine is at once very different from, and totally congruent with, the common RM plots of young-woman-discovers-her-unsuspected-and-usual-talent and beauty-and-the-beast (not just in species or physical appearance, but in terms of an honor-based bond between two very different people). There's a lot of blood (vampires, after all) and some sex, and even a little politics. The worldbuilding is good - as always, I enjoy how she does systems of magic - and the food porn makes me huuuuuungry. I don't find the Heroic Vampire Character swoon-inducing, but as the text doesn't strongarm me into finding him so (cough, lateseasonsofBuffy, cough) that's not a problem. If I were to look for an analogue, he's more like a potentially-malign Spock, or (really) an even-more-threatening Beast from RM's Beauty. Possibly Morpheus in Sandman. He's really alien in a way Buffyverse vampires are not.
