(no subject)

Growing up, I understood the Jewish day of atonement to be called Yom KihPOOR (second word an iamb, second syllable rhyming with store.) However, I do recall the following exchange in high school:

ME: ...so Shira said to Eliana, all shocked, "You went out on Yom KihPOOR?"
Observant Jewish Acquaintance: "Yom KihPOOR?" Snerk.
ME: Uh...?
*bell rings for class, ending the conversation*

Through the years I have also heard it pronounced Yom Kipper (spondee, like the preserved fish, rhymes with zipper.)

So, friends o' mine, what's the straight dope? Regional US variation? One anglicized and the other not (a la Notre Dahm/Notre Dayme)? Modern vs Torah Hebrew? Ashkenazic/Sephardic variation? Or is the Hebrew actually in between, more like "KihPURR" (iamb, second syllable what a cat does) and the gentile ear pushes it one way or the other?
