I have recently fallen, via gifts, into the Great Smelly Obsessions, by which I mean
BPAL and
Lush. Oh, alas. :)
Some time ago
headrush100 sent me some lovely citrus-herby Bohemian soap from Lush, which I have been enjoying greatly. Then, about ten days ago, a Lush opened up mere blocks from work, and I had to go in to explore. (When you've been a victim of a crime,
you need ungents. Dammit.) I got a clove-and-cinnamon shampoo bar and a bottle of tea tree facial toner. The toner is very nice; the shampoo smells divine, but it strips my hair like turpentine. The results were not dire because I followed up with about half a cup of my current conditioner (John Frieda Brilliant Brunette), but I don't know that I can use the shampoo bar except in circumstances when I need product (or five days of camping grime) stripped off my hair.
antennapedia sent me a BPAL care package with a whole mess of imps. I, uh, I get the appeal now. *g* I spend at least a little of most evenings recreationally sniffing my wrists.
So far I've spent the most time with Lightning, which is described on the website as
Lightning slashing the midnight skies over the endless reaches of the ocean. The electric tang of ozone, marine notes, and a drop of sharp rain. I find that it smells much sweeter than that - as if that fresh, rain-driven wind from the ocean had taken a detour through a formal garden before it got to me. Or, to put it in the most mundane terms possible, the stuff smells like a really, really
nice fabric softener with a name like "mountain fresh." My skin seems to be fairly inert, at least on my wrists, because it smells pretty much the same on me. The sweetness does mellow out after a little while, though I wish the sharpness in the description were more apparent.
I love The Dormouse:
A dizzying eddy of four teas brushed with light herbs and a breath of peony. It's very light and fresh in the vial, and on me it has a nice crispness.
The other night I tried Dragon's Bone:
The dry, thin scent of a draconic ossuary. Dragon's blood resin with white sandalwood, dusty orris and crisp blondewood.. In the vial it smells... not like anything I know. Strong, slightly sweet, very slightly spicy. Anointing oil used at coronations or confirmations should smell like this. On me the sandalwood comes out and the smell gets drier and dustier the longer I wear it.
