kivrin: Buffy snuggling Willow with the word "Love" (b/w! (glim))
( Feb. 12th, 2006 12:27 pm)

I really thought we'd been had again.  The last time I looked out the window last night, it was snowing half-heartedly and the ground was more wet than white.  "Hmph," I thought, when I turned out my light.  "Nor'easter, hmph!"

When I got up at 8:30 and pulled up the blinds, my windows were white, all the screens choked with blown snow.  By standing on tiptoe I could peer through an upper corner to see the cars on the street turned into bakery cupcakes and the bushes across the way bowed almost to the ground.  There's at least a foot of snow on the ground, fine powder over heavy wet slush.  If it freezes tonight it will be desperately treacherous tomorrow.  Even this morning I had to tread carefully in my hiking boots because the slush filled the treads and left me with little grip.

I grew up living halfway up a rather steep hill, and on days of heavy snow it was easier as well as faster to take the path through the woods instead of picking our way up the sidewalk.  Until I was on my way home from church today, though, the full portent of the phrase "uphill in the snow" had faded into the dim mists of memory.  My thighs now remember.

This looks like a good afternoon for squash soup.  And chai.
