I think some woman was beating her child on the sidewalk outside my apartment.
I heard the crying first, loud sobbing wails, not an infant's, but as desperate and frightened as the Sprout's when she toppled off the couch on New Year's Eve. It kept on, and didn't move past the house, and there was yelling, as well, a woman yelling. I went to the window when I heard the woman yell "give me your fucking [something]." Right when I pulled my shade up I could see someone in a short quilted jacket with a fur-trimmed hood bent over someone or something out of sight behind the shrubbery that edges the sidewalk. "Get up!" she shouted. Her arm was back, and then it went down. Hard. Then she started moving, shouting "None of your business! None of your business!" to someone up the block, who responded "You shouldn't be a mother!"
That was about two hours ago, and I still have not much to say other than fuck. I thought about calling 911, but I didn't get a good look at the adult or the child, so it's not like the police/social services would have anything to go on. I didn't see the child at all. And the last city cops I dealt with were, shall we say, not inspiring of confidence.
Fuck.
