Last night I watched Charlotte Gray. I can see why it didn't do too well in theaters - it's too slow for a thriller and too... glossy for a Serious Art Film. But my heroine Cate Blanchett is excellent as usual, putting her sharp ear to work at assuming a slight Scottish accent and French fluency, and looking smashing in 1940s clothes. The hips on that woman, oh my. Maybe I'll get The Gift or The Man Who Cried tonight. Because there can never be enough Cate.
On the principle that there can also never be too much Baz Luhrman, I also rented his Romeo & Juliet, to give it a long-planned third go. I made it about halfway through, and do plan to watch the rest, and I'm slightly more convinced than I was... but that isn't saying a whole lot. It's visually stunning and Claire Danes is not half bad. Otherwise... *shrug* I guess that when it comes to Shakespeare I'll take the Kenneth Branagh approach over the Red Curtain one. (Though Love's Labors' Lost was rather weak, I must say.)
